Support our JFS Older Adult Services staff as they host ESL classes & conversation groups for Russian-speaking older adults. ESL Tutor volunteers will assist staff in teaching older adults by engaging with them in classes, conversation practice groups, and individual tutoring. A screening process is required to ensure the best match for volunteers and students alike. Following screening and approval, volunteers will be able to meet the teacher and class.
Hours and Commitment:
- Volunteer shifts can be scheduled as available, on the
following weekdays:
- Mondays | 10:00 a.m.
– 11:00 a.m
- Located at the Northshore Senior Center, in Bothell
- Wednesdays | 10:00 a.m.
– 11:00 a.m
- Located at the Lake City Senior Center, in Seattle
- Mondays | 10:00 a.m.
– 11:00 a.m
- Other potential locations include:
- Together Center, in Redmond
- JFS Capitol Hill Campus, in Seattle
- Three-month minimum commitment.
Responsibilities:
- Assist JFS staff in class with lesson plan instruction, and work individually with students as needed.
- Engage in small group as well as individual English conversation practice with older adults.
- Provide constructive feedback and guidance.
- Document volunteer hours.
Requirements:
- Ability to assist in classroom or as a tutor on a consistent basis.
- Be reliable, non-judgmental and resourceful.
- Be a patient listener and self-directed.
- Work cooperatively with JFS staff, and be amendable to staff supervision.
- Be respectful to and comfortable working with diverse populations and supporting the JFS mission.
- Successful completion of application process, including background check.
Recommended:
- Ability to speak Russian is not required, but a plus!
